Hi Samuel, brown fat is not dangerous for our health. Its main function is to burn fats to keep body temperature when we are cold, and people with more brown fat are usually leaner and more active.
When we talk about fat in general we are referring to what experts call “white fat”, that is a long-term storage for lipids or fats. This is the most abundant fat and accumulates in our belly or hips when we gain weight, for example.
Brown fat is very different. It’s also a type of fat, because brown fat cells are full of lipids, but these lipids or fats are burnt to produce heat and not stored for long periods of time. It’s mainly located in the deep neck area.
People with obesity and diabetes have less brown fat than healthy people. Experts have proven that increasing the activity and amount of brown fat might be good for obese and diabetic patients, because it’s a safe way of burning calories and can help to reduce their weight in a controlled manner.
