Not quite, they are planning to switch the telescope on in 2025 so a little while yet. There is a Victorian telescope in the observatory but unfortunately the dome doesn’t open any more so it’s quite hard to use it to see stars.
I was lucky enough to do Astronomy GCSE at my school. Through computers we had a session where we controlled the large telescopes on Hawaii to look and take pictures of galaxies and stars at different stages of their lives. Each time we moved the telescope we could watch it slowly panning to the coordinates of the sky we inputted and then we would ask it to take a picture – this could take over to 5 minutes as we aimed to get the longest exposure to get the best quality of the stars and galaxies. My favourite picture I took was of the Crab Nebula.
