My work focuses on the study of functional materials which are intended for implementation in nuclear fusion reactors. The reactors use powerful magnetic fields to heat up hydrogen gas to very high temperatures in order to convert the hydrogen into helium. The ‘fusion’ of the hydrogen into helium releases a lot of energy! The goal is to use this energy for sustainable, carbon-neutral electricity generation!
-
My Typical Day:
I always have meetings with other scientists and engineers to talk about different ideas. I also carry out my experiments for the day and try to find relationships in the data I collect.

My Interview
-
How would you describe yourself in 3 words?
Cheery, friendly and curious
What did you want to be after you left school?
My dream was to obtain a PhD and to work as a scientist. At the time of leaving school, I wasn't sure which field in particular I wanted to work in, so I chose to study chemistry as it is a good starting point for a lot of different scientific pursuits.
Were you ever in trouble at school?
Yes, I was a rambunctious child!
Who is your favourite singer or band?
It's a toss up between Jason Derulo and Enrique Iglesias!
What's your favourite food?
Tex-mex style spicy food
If you had 3 wishes for yourself what would they be? - be honest!
I would love my career to be a special one. All I really want is to help the world, both by working in science and by talking to the public, thus inspiring future scientists.
Tell us a joke.
Q: Where did Brock take Nurse Joy for a date? A: The PokeBall
