I live with my boyfriend in Dorset. We live near New Forest. We are trying to create a home for hedgehogs, insects and frogs in our garden and our bungalow is surrounded by trees which the birds love. We have a resident owl who we have named Terry. I love running and did London marathon last year. I also regularly do parkrun. My favourite animal is a killer whale, and I saw them last year in Canada in the wild which was magical. I love Disney films and my favourite is Lion King.

I work for an engineering company that works closely with our local council. My job is to help on projects that stop flooding and coastal erosion in the south coast. In particular I help to support protected animals and their habitats when these projects are carried out. I will research into what areas are protected, and talk with relevant bodies to ensure we are carrying out the project in the right way so we do not harm any of those animals and their habitats.
-
My Typical Day:
I get up early and go for my morning run! When I arrive at work I switch on my computer and find out what animals need to be looked after in the different areas. I do lots of research and speak with lots of different people to make sure these animals are being protected. As we have a lot of sea in the south coast I may also talk to divers!

I first have to understand the project I am working on, e.g new groynes are needed on the beach to protect the beach from eroding. I then have to research into the different protected areas that would be included for this project , e.g SSSIs (Sites of Special Scientific Interest), SACs, (Special Areas of Conservation). These areas have been designated under specific legislation, and they are all designated for different reasons. This means I have to make sure I understand why they are designated, and then I relay this to my project team so they too understand why they are designated, and the implications of this for the project.
I will also undertake site visits to really understand the area, and whether there have been any changes since the dates of the information I may have found online. I also speak with the relevant bodies to get their advice on what we can and can’t do, this includes Natural England and local Wildlife Trusts. As most of the projects I am working on involve the sea, I also speak with local divers (if they are available) to see if they have any photos from their dives, and if they have anything to add about the area and wildlife they see. I may also speak with other local groups such as bird watchers.
