The reason my days tend to vary so much is that I am generally working on a long term project that might last up to a year or more. Together with a main project I am also supporting several missions that are either in operational service or being prepared for service. This means that at almost any time I can be called upon to investigate a problem that has been reported on one of the spacecrafts. It may also be that one of the already operational spacecraft is required to operate in a different way where I have to provide a new capability in the software.
Even with my main long term projects the work varies as projects always go through different stages as they travel through what is know as their “life cycle”. For example the first stage in all software projects is understanding exactly what the software is required to do – “what am I going to build”. Sometime later on in the project where the software will have been mostly written and its ready to be run on the “hardware” were hardware is the term for a board of electronics that includes a microprocessor that the software will run. That’s always an exciting part as the software I have worked on for months finally takes on a life of it’s own – of course it never works perfectly the first time.
