I live in Carlisle with friends and travel into Scotland for work. I have a 12 year old Border Collie (see below) and originally am from Newcastle. I used to work on a zoo licensed farm before while in university and got the opportunity to work with a range of unique and exotic animals for seven years. In my spare time, I play rugby, train boxing and love to travel as much as possible.

I work within a team that focuses on making sure when decommissioning (deconstructing or taking down) a closed nuclear power plant both people and the environment are kept safe and in the best condition. This job involves a lot of creative thinking as nuclear reactors weren’t built to ever be taken down in the 1900’s. I work in Scotland at the moment and over the next two years will work in 3/4 roles across the country involved in nuclear decommissioning to learn more about how to keep the environment and public as safe as possible. In short, think of Homer Simpson but a lot more safe and a no sleeping on the job!
Alongside my nuclear work, over the next two years, in a team of ten I am working to open a small business to sell interesting and unique products with all money raised being donated to charity. Our business is focused on selling Eco-friendly dog toys to donate our profits to a charity focused on providing services to dogs in need.

My Typical Day:
I get up before the sun rises! Make my way into the nuclear power plant I work on enter the site and put on my high-vis jacket, steel toe capped boots, hard hat and glasses and get to work on site assessing the environmental safety of different areas of the power plant.

My work involves a mixture of both office based and on site work. This includes completing documents and written work and physically going on to site to complete environmental walk around’s of the nuclear reactors and other parts of the power plant. I attend meetings with colleagues to get involved in projects on site and learn more about how to keep the environment safe! Work on a nuclear power plant is diverse and no day is like the next!

Use the money to contribute to showing more students what working in stem, particularly nuclear, looks like and how interesting it can be!
