I work at the University of Birmingham in the School of Chemistry. I mainly focus on developing catalysts for depolymerisation (deconstruction) of common commercial polymers (aka plastics) so that their building blocks can be reclaimed and reused. I spend most of my time in the lab (when there’s no pandemic) and do a lot of NMR spectrometry, plus a little bit of computer modelling.
-
My Typical Day:
I usually spend the majority of my day in a chemistry lab, setting up reactions and then measuring the speed of reactions by sampling them and taking the samples to a spectrometer which tells me how much of the desired product has been made. I also spend time in an office making graphs and writing about my data.
