Work History:
For work experience I worked at a guitar shop because I thought it would make me look really cool but it was boring!
During University I worked in Healthy Eatery over summer breaks, I loved being a waitress and became a smoothie expert!
I completed a 2 month internship at UCL working on 3D printing custom ‘fake’ kidneys to help surgeons plan operations and I worked on a device to allow my group to make their own 3D printing ‘ink’ using recycled materials

I’m a 24 year old Essex girl currently living in Birmingham where I’m completing my PhD. I completed my Physics BSc last year at the University of Exeter. Up until the end of year 12, I was planning on going to uni to study Fine Art as I wanted to be a painter! Weirdly, I started thinking that I’d miss the structure of learning physics & maths. I was accepted onto an Oxford summer school where I spent ‘a week in the life of a Physics student’ and decided it was for me; and here I am! Outside from this my life is consumed by musicals, Youtube and rubbish Netflix shows. I am also a vegetarian and an advocate for cruelty free cosmetics & animal free research!

I’m in the third year of my PhD project working within a new CDT group dedicated to drug discovery and tissue engineering. The goal of my project is to develop a fast, portable and non-invasive device to diagnose traumatic brain injury (TBI) using Raman Spectroscopy. This uses lasers to bounce off the back of the patients eye to get information about what’s happening in the brain.

My Typical Day:
My first year involved a lot of reading and writing to allow me to fully understand the new field I’ve just entered. Though I make sure I pop on some goggles and a lab coat a few times a week to work on my device design in our optics lab and study the biochemicals in the eye in our Raman spectroscopy lab.
