I live in Newcastle upon Tyne and work as a civil engineer in the centre of the city. I’m originally from Staffordshire, but I’ve not lived there since I left school after A-levels! Outside of work, I am a member of a local badminton team, captaining one of their mixed teams which plays in a local league.

I work as a civil maritime engineer, in a design consultancy company. My work involves designing structures, such as quay walls and pontoons, for the purpose of mooring boats, ferries and large ships. The work I do can vary from feasibility studies to determine how expensive a new shipyard would be to construct, to detailed design where I am completing structural calculations, using my knowledge of steel and concrete design.

My Typical Day:
I arrive at the office at 8:30am and usually have a morning team meeting. After this, I will be completing calculations or writing reports for projects through the day. I have lunch with friends and sometimes play table tennis in the basement of our office. In the afternoon, there may be more calculations or meetings with clients.

My day starts at around 8:30am when I arrive in the office. Often, I will have a morning team meeting, but this will depend on the project I am working on. Generally, I spend the day completing calculations and writing reports. If I am project managing, then I will also be answering emails from the Client and leading meetings.
At lunchtime, I’ll have lunch in the basement with some friends from both my sector (Maritime) and other sectors, such as the Environment team and Water team. I therefore get to hear about lots of other projects the company is working on! There may also be some table tennis at lunchtime, as we have a table tennis table in the office basement.
In the afternoon, there may be more meetings, or I may be working independently on calculations, structural modelling using various software packages or communicating conclusions through reports. My day generally finishes around 5pm.
Alongside office work, I occassionally have visits to construction sites to see how work is progressing on projects, or to inspect structures.
